Candor Library Board Monthly Meeting Minutes

October 12, 2022

In Attendance:   Trish Engelhard (Board President), Marcia Enright, Deanna Houck, Lois Purcell, Rita Quinlan, Oreal Richards, Roy Yarrington

  • The meeting was called to order at about 7:17 p.m.
  • Board members had reviewed the minutes from our September meeting via email. Roy made a motion that we accept the minutes, Oreal seconded his motion, and all attendees agreed.
  • We reviewed the treasurer’s report for September, prepared by Kim Sullivan. We noted a typo in the amount of the Capital Fund, which Marcia will bring to the attention of Kim.  With that exception, the financial report was accepted (moved by Rita and seconded by Roy).

MISCELLANEOUS BUSINESS:

  • Roy reported that the book sale proceeds from the previous weekend was $2400.00
  • Marcia mentioned the contract with the village and reported that she had left a work order with the village office for light bulbs to be replaced in the back of the library in the juvenile section and a reminder to them that there is a need to do some weather stripping.
  • We discussed having Sarah Glogowski from FLLS attend a board meeting to talk with us about how to get our request for a tax increase on the school’s budget/ballot/vote next year. {Following our October board meeting, Trish sent an email confirming that Sarah will indeed attend out November meeting}

LIBRARIAN’S REPORT:

 With Summer Reading Program over and kids back in school, things have slowed down a bit at the library. After 2 weeks off we started Story Hour back again on September 13th with a far smaller group then we had at the end of June. The first week back had 6 kids and 5 adults and last week we were up to 11 kids and 8 adults. Donna from Family Resource Center called in sick this past Tuesday morning so Zina Benjamin, who has been helping with crafts, and I were quick planning things out when we were happily surprised by Deb and Bill Collier with their granddaughter. Deb stepped right in to lead the reading and then everyone headed over to the Fire Department where Ryan Collier and a couple other volunteers showed the kids their gear and handed out helmets and let the kids climb in the trucks. A great time was had by all. Next week will bring a visit to Iron Kettle Farm, and then a Halloween celebration October 25th.

We debated doing a Scare Crow this year, but Linda came up with a great idea and we managed to get it done just in time to share 3rd place with 3 other entries!

The library is participating in the Great Give Back through October by collecting items for the Bread of Life Pantry. The bin is in the hall. We’re off to a slow start but hopefully we will end up doing as well as last year.

We have our Library Café mostly set up. We need a better sign and will put out a water pitcher and donation can.

We still have 3 older computers running on Windows 8.1 which will no longer be supported starting January 2023. They will still be functional though. I did send an email to Rex and Eric to see if they can be upgraded to Windows 10 but have not heard back yet. We also have the two towers from the staff computers that were replaced this year if anyone is interested in them or has a suggestion what to do with them.

I have contacted someone, whose name was shared by Trish’s music partner Danielle, about doing a book repair workshop for us, but have not heard back yet.

We’ve been invited to participate in the first community Trunk or Treat. For the past few years, we’ve been doing Halloween at the library, so I had thought to just stick with that, although there may be fewer kids out and about due to the Trunk or Treat event. Trunk or Treat will be on Halloween and I’m not sure if that is the day the Village plans for Trick or Treaters. I don’t know if the Friends or any Board members are interested in participating in the Trunk or Treat event. I’m open to suggestions.

I hope to get caught up on some weeding and book purchases, and then try to pick up on some make and takes as well.
