Library Assistant

Job Summary
The Library Assistant is a front-line staff member whose primary duties include providing direct patron services, performing clerical work, and handling various other tasks as assigned or required.
 
Qualifications & Experience
Knowledge:
* High school diploma or equivalent
* Comfortable using computers and learning new systems
* Prior library or customer service experience is a plus, but is not required
 
Ability to:
* Work independently and manage time and tasks efficiently, often without direct supervision, but also knows when to ask for guidance
* Follow established library policies and procedures and troubleshoot minor issues independently
* Pay attention to the smallest of details and to organize things at a high level
* Set daily priorities based on knowledge of the overall function of the library
* Use standard office equipment including computers, photocopiers, scanners, fax machines, calculators, etc.
* Deal effectively and tactfully with a variety of individuals including library staff, board trustees, patrons, and the general public
* Work cooperatively with other staff members
* Use alphabetical and numerical filing systems
 
Key Duties & Responsibilities
* Handle all aspects of patron services related to circulation (checking library materials in and out, assisting patrons with making hold requests, and registering new patrons, managing patron accounts, etc.)
* Assist patrons (via telephone and in person) with basic inquiries and direct patrons to appropriate resources
* Provide patrons with basic technology assistance with computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and other resources available through the library
* Understand the range of library resources that are available and be able to provide patron assistance with all associated websites, apps, and programs
* Shelve library materials and ensure that items are in the correct location
* Inspect the condition of library materials both before and after check-out to ascertain any damage that requires attention
* Assist with processing library items (labels, protective covers, basic repairs, etc.)
* Monitor and tidy public areas to ensure a clean, organized environment
* Open and close the library as needed
* Other duties as assigned
 
Physical Demands & Requirements
* Frequent lifting of more than 10 pounds
* Pushing and pulling book carts
* Crouching and kneeling at low shelves
* Reaching above eye level, sometimes with the use of a stepstool
* Potentially standing (or being on your feet) for long stretches of time
* Ability to use a keyboard and item scanner
* Ability to read font size 12 or smaller on item labels
 
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly rate: $16.00 – $17.00 per hour based on education and experience
Part-time hours: 6-10 hours/week
                        Tuesday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
                        Friday 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
                        Every other Saturday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Sick time accrued at 2 minutes for each hour worked

You know how to make patrons feel welcome and supported. You take pride in keeping things organized and running smoothly. You’re not afraid to admit you don’t already know everything you need to know to do this job, but you’re willing to learn and to keep learning.
