Candor Free Library Director: Position Description

Candor Free Library, located in Candor, New York, is seeking an organized, creative, and
community-oriented person to fill the position of Library Director. Our library’s mission is to
provide expert book and materials selection and to aid the individual in the pursuit of education,
information, pleasure, research, and the creative use of leisure time.
Minimum Qualifications:
 
* Two years of education or training beyond high school
* Experience working with people of all ages
* Excellent communication skills (oral and written)
* Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and volunteers, the Board,
local schools and the public, and to promote the library in the community
* Knowledge of computer technology and ability to use online catalog system

Duties include, but are not limited to:
 
* Maintaining a welcome environment for patrons, providing friendly and helpful service
to all
* Responsibility for the operation of Candor Free Library and its programs and services
* Managing and directing the work of staff and volunteers
* Reporting to the Board on a regular basis, attending monthly Board meetings and
presenting a monthly report
* Working with the Board to create policies for the library in accordance with state regulations
* Working with the Library Board on financial and other administrative issues
* Purchasing library and other supplies as needed
* Cataloging books, DVDs and other materials as they are added to the collection
* Responsibility for Collections management and development, including procuring new and
relevant materials for the library and weeding out-of-date and /or unused materials as needed
* Oversight of record keeping and working with the bookkeeper to prepare an annual budget
and the required annual report to the state and community
* Directing building and equipment maintenance in conjunction with the Board and the
Village of Candor (and computer and internet with support from FLLS technical services)
* Pursuing training on library issues through the Finger Lakes Library System and ensuring
that staff receive appropriate training
* Developing and administering programs to meet the needs and interests of the community,
particularly Story hour and the Summer Reading Program
* Seeking and applying to appropriate grants with the goal of providing exceptional programs
and enhancing the library collection and experience
* Collaborating with other libraries and community groups as able, to provide enhanced
service to the community
* Ability to lift and carry 25 #

Compensation:

* $16.50 – $19/hour based on education and experience.
* Part-time position of 15-18 hours a week, sometimes requiring the director to adopt a flexible work schedule for events,
programs, and meetings that may involve some weekends and evenings.
* No health benefits.
